Barbara Johnson

Barbara Johnson, age 62, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 29, at her home surrounded by her two daughters, friends and caregivers. Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Gilmer, TX, born on December 17, 1955. Throughout Barbara’s life she was a friend, mother, wife and mentor; she never met a stranger.

Barbara met the love of her life, Alvin, at the tender age of 14. Some say love at first sight doesn’t exist, but for Alvin and Barbara it did. Inseparable from the beginning they courted for 3 years before Alvin proposed to her in a very sweet and innocent way. They were married on July 6, 1973, in an intimate ceremony; Barbara wore a dress she herself made. Five years later they welcomed their first daughter, Shelly; six years later they welcomed their second daughter, Amy. On January, 8, 2009 grandson Robert “Trey” Shields III was born. Barbara adored Trey; he was Mawmaws little fella. She enjoyed spending time with him from going to the movies to simply sitting at the table and talking to him.

Alvin and Barbara have lived a true love story. Shortly after celebrating their 40th anniversary the Lord called Alvin home. Their story was filled with laughter, respect, forgiveness but most importantly- the love they had for each other. Alvin and Barbara were soul mates from the very beginning to the end. As we approach July, 6 they will not have to celebrate another anniversary apart. They will be reunited in Heaven.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Shelly Johnson and fiancé, Malcolm Daniels of Longview; daughter, Amy Shields and husband, Robert Jr of Gilmer; grandson, Trey Shields of Gilmer. She will also be remembered by many as she touched everyone’s heart with her loving spirit.

The family welcomes friends and family for a memorial visitation at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, Texas, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

Shelly and Amy would like to extend their greatest and warmest gratitude to April and the staff at Lifecare Health Services as well as Diamonique, Wendy and Casey with Visiting Angels.
