Billy Earl Hobbs

Billy Earl Hobbs, also known as “Pop” or “Pops” by family, passed away on March 4, 2020 in Tyler, Texas as a result of health complications.

Born in Big Sandy on March 14, 1942 to Odell and Juanita, Billy grew up and graduated in the Big Sandy, Texas community, and graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1960. He entered the Army in the summer of 1964 and was discharged with an Honorable Discharge in 1967. After the Army, Billy worked with his father in construction before landing a job with the Railroad where he went on to have a successful career of over 40 years and retiring as a conductor. Billy and Jo were married in November of 1994, and settled down in Tyler, where they came together surrounded by their 5 children between them.

Billy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and avid “Shop Tinkerer”. He enjoyed working in his shop, reading, spending time with family, and most of all, helping his friends with whatever needs they might have. He was a great problem-solver, and often took on any unwanted projects at home and with friends who were unable to do so. Billy had a heart of gold and always put the needs of others before his own.

In his younger days Billy enjoyed dancing which is where he met Jo and he also enjoyed bowling and joined a league at the bowling alley Jo worked at.

In some of his later days, he enjoyed relaxing in his chair, communicating with friends through phone calls and computer emails, and gathering photos of loved ones.

He is survived by his loving wife Jo Hobbs; five children Scott Wood and wife Benita, Justin Hobbs, Selena Hobbs, Jodi Wilson and husband Jason and Colby Hobbs; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren as well as many other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in his death by parents Earl Odell Hobbs in 2004, and Sarah Juanita Hobbs in 2009, along with sister Alice Katherine Mooney in 1998, and nephew Dereck Richard Mooney in 2003.

Billy will be forever and deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. As per Billy’s wishes, a graveside only service will be held at the Hoover Cemetery at 2:00 PM with Reverend Bob Logan officiating.
