Dr. Guy T. Harrison, Sr.

Dr. Guy T. Harrison Gladewater -- Services for Dr. Guy T. Harrison of Plano and formerly of Gladewater will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at 11 A.M. at Croley Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Welton Jones and Larry W. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Gladewater Memorial Park. Born on September 6, 1924, in Garza County, he was the youngest of nine children born to Thomas H. Harrison and Johnny LaDora Fowlkes Harrison. A 1941 graduate of Post High School, he enrolled in John Tarleton Agriculture College, now Tarleton State University. From there he joined the 99th Infantry Division. This unit saw action in the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhur Pocket, Cologne Plain and Bridge at Remagen. Guy received two bronze stars and a battlefield commission. He was discharged in April 1946. He married Margaret Lou Bailey on July 13, 1946. Armed with the GI Bill and a football scholarship, he enrolled at East Texas State. He graduated in January 1948 with both B.S. and M.S. degrees. He earned a Doctor of Education degree from North Texas State University in May 1977. Guy worked as coach and teacher in Laredo, Phillips, Canyon, and Gladewater Independent School Districts, retiring as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction at Irving Independent School District in 1984. After retiring, he and Margaret returned to Gladewater and their beloved First Methodist Church. He served four different years as Chairman of the Administrative Board and as Chairperson of the Building Committee for the Christian Life Center. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Lay Leader, Lay Delegate and virtually every church committee. He was a teacher of the 20th Century Class for many years. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son and wife, Dr. Guy and Esther Harrison of Shelbyville; daughter and husband, Paula and Jack Harris of Athens; 4 grandchildren, Kim Dumaine Banuelos and husband Carlos Banuelos of Allen; Misty and husband Joe Fincher of Katy; Angie Jones of Plano; and Jonathan Harris of Dallas; 5 great-grandchildren, Stephen Daniel Dumaine, Hayley McKinney, Lilian Margaret Jones, Alexis Danielle Banuelos, and Daniela Nicole Banuelos. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, from 10 A.M. until service time.
