Dwain Kent Sumpter

Dwain Kent Sumpter, known to many as simply “Sumpter” and known by grandchildren as “Pop” left this world to live eternally with his Lord on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the age 79 – only 9 days away from his 80th birthday.
He was born in Higbee, Missouri on June 2, 1938 to the late Austin Frank Sumpter and Molly Mariah “Margie” Avery Sumpter. In Dwain’s words, “he got to Texas as soon as he could” . He married the former, Alana “Al” Hamill on September 2, 1983 in Las Vegas and lived the last 35 years in the Winona, Texas area.
Dwain graduated from Northeast Missouri State with a B.S. in Business. He worked as Director of Manufacturing for Dearborn Brass where he made many lasting friendships. Following his retirement from Dearborn, he served as Purchasing and Special Projects Agent for Agtoprof in Tyler. He was an avid fisherman, loved riding horses and team penning with his friends, and enjoyed playing cards with friends and family.
Dwain was a member of Alpine Church of Christ in Longview and was formerly a member of the Big Sandy Church of Christ where he served as an elder for 3 years. He was a Master Mason of the Masonic Lodge 527 in Higbee, Missouri. Dwain also served five years as a board member of the International Team Penning Association and worked with his beloved Alpine brothers and sisters at Caring and Sharing in Longview.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Alana “Al” Sumpter of Winona; sons, Scott A. Sumpter of San Antonio, and Brett A Sumpter and wife Missy of Tyler as well as his brother, Artis Sumpter and wife Sharon of Higbee, Missouri; grandchildren, Sydney Sumpter, Dylan Sumpter, Austin Sumpter; and niece, Sherri lea Ellward and husband Eric.
A memorial visitation gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Chapel at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Alpine Church of Christ Praise and Worship ministry or to Caring and Sharing of Longview through Alpine Church of Christ.
