Memorial services for James (Doug) Akins, 63, of Gilmer, Texas will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer with Pastor Doc Murphy officiating. Doug went to be with the Lord on June 30, 2016. He was born on March 20, 1953 in Sweetwater, Texas to John and Luevene Atkins. He grew up most of his life in Sweetwater. As a child he loved spending time with his family and being outdoors. Doug loved the company of all his family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent on the lake fishing, being with his wife who he loved so deeply, and hunting arrowheads with his son. He was a loving, Christian man with a witty, funny, prankster personality that everyone loved and he will be deeply missed. Doug is survived by his wife, Deborah Akins of Gilmer; parents, John and Luevene Akins of Sweetwater; sons, Phillip Akins and wife, Linda of Gilmer, Charles Wood and wife, Liberty of Denton, Jason Swell of Kilgore, Joshua Cooley of Kileen; daughters, Amanda Jager and husband, Steve of Houston, Alicia Rodriguez and wife, Peggy of Texarkana, TX, Sheri Wood of Florida; brother, Stephen Baker; numerous grandchildren and one great grandchild. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.
