Services for Mr. Louie G. Smith,88, of Gilmer will be held 2:00 P.M, Friday, March 5, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Gilmer with Reverend Roddy Bland and Reverend Kenneth Calhoun officiating under the direction of Croley Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Mr. Smith passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Longview. He was born November 16, 1921, to Otis and Buecie Smith in Gilmer and attended Harleton"s School, before moving back to Upshur County where he graduated from New Diana High School. Mr. Smith married Helen Loyd, his high school sweetheart and love of his life on March 23, 1940 and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in twenty days. He served in the U. S. 3rd Army under General Patton for 2 " years. Mr. Smith served on the Gilmer School Board, Appraisal Review Board, Upshur Gregg Soil and Water Conservation Board, Etex Communication Coop Board, later Etex Celluar Board and a member of the Ashland Lodge #1138 A.F & A.M of Diana. He was awarded the Conservation Farmer in 2000 and in 2001 the Resident Conservation Farmer of Region IV. He had numerous occupations, Auto Shop, Tractor and Baler Shop manager, Earth Moving business, lumber, but his favorite was ranching. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Gilmer; two sons, Micheal and wife Melinda of Gilmer, David of Gilmer; brother, Dr. Aubrey "Bo" Smith of Nashville, Ark.; three sisters, Nellie Plummer of Diana, Bonnie Bassham of Ore City, Carolyn Reeves of Jefferson; three grandsons, Mikki Smith and wife Kellie of Shreveport, Marc Smith of Gladewater, Madison Smith and wife Kikki of Ore City; two granddaughters, Pamela Smith-Ray and husband Don of Gilmer, and Sara Smith of Gilmer; ten great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Matthew Smith; sister, Jean Willeford Pallbearers are Mikki Smith, Marc Smith, Madison Smith, Don Ray, Garry Ormes and Mark Smith. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Wesley Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church.
