Services for Rex M. "Brug" Parrish, 95, formerly of Bettie, Texas will be held at 10 am Friday, February 4, 2011 at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer with Rev. Bill Ingram officiating. Interment will follow at Willow Oak Cemetery in Upshur County. Mr. Parrish passed away on Sunday, January 30, after a short stay in the hospital in Baytown, Texas, where he was currently living. He was born, one of eight children, to Warren and Lula Parrish on October 16, 1915, and graduated from Union Hill High School. In 1937 Rex Parrish and Verda Bishop were married at Holly Springs Baptist Church. He served in the Navy in World War II on a troop transport ship, the U.S.S. Boise. They spent most of their lives in Upshur County with brief times away following his oil field career to Oklahoma and Louisiana. They always returned to family and friends in Bettie where he enjoyed gardening and raising cattle. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Verda Bishop Parrish, his parents, and all of his brothers and sisters. Mr. Parrish is survived by two daughters, Sylvia and Bill Ingram of Baytown, Texas, Jane and Ken Fleming of Athens, Alabama; four grandchildren, Brad Ingram, Craig Fleming, Shari Ingram, Wendy Davis; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 3 from 6-8 pm at Croley Funeral Home.
