Services for Tom Lewis of Gilmer will be held at 11:00 am. Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer with the Rev. Gary Mason officiating. Interment will follow at City Cemetery in Sulphur Springs, TX at 3:00 pm. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. on Sunday, July 4, 2010, at the funeral home. Tom was born August 25, 1929, in Oakdale, LA. He served combat duty in the Army during the Korean War. He received a Bachelor of Science in education from Louisiana Tech University, a Masters in education from Texas A&M University, and his doctorate course work at East Texas State University and his certification in school administration. He later received a certification in special education. Tom spent 37 years in education and had a true love of children. He previously lived in Gilmer during the late seventies when he served as Superintendent of Union Hill ISD and served on the boards of the Upshur County Child Protective Services, the North East Texas Council of Governments, and the local United Way. Tom was also an active member in the community and the church. Tom was a member in the Masonic Lodge and the Rotary Club for many years. He also served as Superintendent of Sunday Schools and on the Administrative Board of previous churches. Since returning to Gilmer, he had been a member of the Fisherman's Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of Gilmer. He is survived by his loving wife, Reta Lewis of Gilmer; children and their spouses, Dave and Kim Lewis of Commerce, Pam and Craig Greenberg of Mt. Vernon, Scott and Nonie Lewis of Fairbanks, AK, Mike and Mary Catherine Lewis of Houston; sister Juanita Crawford of Oakdale, LA; and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ida Lewis; son, James Thomas Lewis; and sister Margie Sanderson. The family would also like to acknowledge the wonderful care that Tom received from Dr. Steve Murray, Kinsman Hospice and Gilmer Care Center.
