Vernon D. Smith Gladewater " Services for Vernon D. Smith, 87, of Gladewater will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at 1 P.M. at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gladewater with Reverend Todd Kaunitz officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater. Born on September 29, 1923, in Pineville, Louisiana, he died on Thursday, July 21, 2011. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, having served during World War II. For most of his adult life, he was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church, Sulphur, Louisiana. He was instrumental in forming the Agin" Cajun Senior Adult Choir. In later years, he was a member of First Baptist Church in Gilmer and First Baptist Church in Gladewater, active in the music program in both churches. His volunteer work included West Calcasieu-Cameron Hospital Auxiliary president and Gladewater Lee Public Library volunteer. He retired from CITGO Oil Refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana, after a life-long career as an electrician. His hobbies included woodworking and spending quality time with his family and friends. He and his wife especially enjoyed traveling throughout the world. He is survived by daughter, Delia Smith of Ashland, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Marcy Smith of Gladewater; grandchildren, Todd and Deanna Smith of Shreveport; Johnny and Veronica Dougan of Kilgore; Tracey and Terry Holmes of Nacogdoches; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Blaine, Blake, Morgan, Avery; loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Mary Smith; wife, Sarah Smith; son, Ernie Smith; brothers, Howard Smith and Edgar Smith. No visitation is scheduled.
