Services for Wendell L. Duke, 73, of Gilmer will be held 10: A.M. on Monday, February 3, 2014, at Croley Chapel in Gilmer with Reverend Marion Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Gilmer. Mr. Duke passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 in Gilmer. He was born on July 25, 1940, in Upshur County, to James Hamilton and Izora Selaster Loftis Duke. Wendell played football for the Gilmer Buckeyes graduating in 1959 and a member of Gilmer First Baptist Church. He was a retired plumber and OSSI Inspector for Upshur County, he was a former manager and Pro for Gilmer County Club. Mr. Duke is survived by his wife, Connie Duke of Gilmer; mother-in-law, Tandie Fannin Young, of Gilmer; sons, Darry W. Duke and wife, Jamie of Oklahoma City and Tyler C. Duke of Ft. Worth; daughters, Cara Duke Hammons and husband, Greg of Dallas, Tanya Hooker and husband, Randy of Alfreda, Ga.; brothers Kenneth Duke and wife, Glenda of Gilmer, Larry Duke and wife, Ruth of Gilmer; sister, Jessie Mae Wilson of Longview; Dorothy Warren and husband, Wray of Winnsboro; sister-in-law, LaJuan Allison and husband, Elvis of Humble; grandchildren, Colt Bickerdike, Dakota Bickerdike, Brianne Duke, Conner Duke, Rylie Hooker, Grayson Hooker, Carly Hooker and Caleb Pettitt; many beloved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February, 2, 2014, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Donations may be made to Shriners Hospital, 3100 Samford Ave, Shreveport, LA. 71103 or St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
