Obituary

Betty Sue Downs, age 92, passed away peacefully in her home on February 22, 2026, in Gilmer, Texas. Born on November 5, 1933, to mother Maude Mary Patterson Bonner and father Alexander Hillary Bonner in Gilmer Texas, Betty Sue was married to her sweetheart Rayford Manson Downs for 61 years. They were married on March 28th, 1950. Betty Sue lived a long and meaningful life centered on faith, family, and community.

A devoted member of Faith Baptist Church in Gilmer, Texas, Betty Sue’s deep love for her Savior, Jesus Christ, was evident in every aspect of her life. She found great joy in worship and treasured the fellowship of her church family. Her faith was a guiding light that inspired all who knew her.

For over twenty years, Betty Sue worked at McDonald’s, where her dedication and kindness left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike. Her strong work ethic and warm spirit were hallmarks of her character.

Family was the cornerstone of Betty Sue’s life. She is survived by her children: Belinda and husband Kevin White; Angela and husband Steve Bayne; Randy and wife Louise Downs; Wanda Urias and Raymond Ramirez; and Bobby Downs.

She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Crystal and Michael Haze; Elly and Mitchell Kelly; David White and Amanda Orr; Mikaela White; Elisa Urias; Jonathan Bayne; Jesse and Miranda Bayne; Austin and Christine Bayne; Brianna and Clinton Bicket; Leah Toves; Lateaf and Kimberly Smith; and a multitude of great grandchildren.

Betty Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Rayford Manson Downs; her daughter, Lana Downs Awbrey; grandson Rasheek "Maka" Makanuie Smith, her siblings and parents. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.

Betty Sue loved cooking and hosting gatherings for family and friends. Her kitchen was a place of love and togetherness, filled with the aroma of meals prepared with care. She also enjoyed reading the Gilmer Mirror and found joy in music, which brought her peace and reflection.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Croley Funeral Home, 305 W Harrison St., Gilmer, Texas.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 3:00 PM for final resting place at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 1582 US Hwy 271 S., Gilmer, Texas.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in late March 2026.

Betty Sue Downs will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her as they celebrate a life lived in faith, love, and service.
