Obituary

Brian Keith Bates, 55, passed away on August 11, 2026. Brian chose to give the gift of life to others through organ donation.

Brian’s story began on June 30, 1971, in a military hospital in Wuerzburg, Germany, where his father was stationed. He grew up in Tyler, Texas, before settling in Gladewater, Texas, where he chose to raise his family and spent the majority of his adult life.

Brian was a master of his craft. He dedicated his life's work to designing high-end homes, creating intricate blueprints, and framing houses across East Texas. He possessed a rare talent and took immense pride in his work, especially when designing and building complex floating staircases and high-profile houses. Brian loved to talk about his passion for building, and his legacy is permanently etched into the beautiful homes he brought to life.

To know Brian was to know a man who was outgoing, loud, and larger-than-life. He had a big smile, an unmistakable laugh, and was hands-down the best storyteller you could ever meet. He absolutely loved to aggravate anyone he could, always in good fun. Brian had an insatiable curiosity about the world; he was deeply passionate about science and history, always had a science show playing, and loved to read his Bible and talk about Jesus.

In his younger years, Brian could be found riding dirt bikes, camping, and playing baseball. As time went on, his passions evolved into gardening, spending time at the beach, deep-sea fishing, and sharing his love of baseball with his children.

Brian is survived by his daughter, Marisa Bates; his mother, Janie Bates; his stepmother, Marilyn Bates; his ex-spouse, Katy Bates; and his sisters, Stacey Emery and Stephanie Deraad. He also leaves behind his nephews, Colton, River, Douglas, and Jaden; his nieces, Madison and Mallory; and many other extended family members and friends.

He was greeted in heaven by his son, Robert Landon “Bo” Bates; his father, Neill Bates; his nephew, Landon Bates; his niece, Trinity Bates; and his grandparents.

The family will receive friends for a time of fellowship Thursday, August 20 at 5:00PM with a Memorial Service in honor of Brians life at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater.
