Elbert Jim Poe, a cherished husband, father, brother, and proud veteran, peacefully passed away on March 10, 2026, in Hawkins, Texas. Born on July 12, 1948, in Weatherford, Texas, Elbert's life was marked by dedication, love for his family, and honorable service to his country.
Elbert answered the call of duty and served with distinction in the United States Army. His commitment to protecting his fellow citizens and upholding the values he held dear was a testament to his character and strength. Those who knew him remembered Elbert not only for his service but also for his unwavering loyalty and kindness.
Throughout his lifetime, Elbert's greatest joy was his family. He is lovingly survived by his devoted spouse, Kate Poe, and their children: Robert Poe, and Amy Marie Thompson along with her husband, Tom. His family also includes his brother, Jim Westbrook, and Jim’s wife, Linda, who stood by his side through the years; and his brother-in-law, Lynn Wheeler. Elbert's legacy continues vibrantly through his four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins who hold him in warm memory.
Elbert was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Homer Poe and Peggy Jean Choate Poe, who laid the foundation for the values he carried throughout his life. He also mourned the loss of his sister, Judy Wheeler, whose memories he held dear.
Elbert Jim Poe’s life was one of quiet strength, resilience, and boundless love. He leaves behind a legacy shaped by service and family devotion that will endure in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. His memory will be cherished by all who loved him, as a man who lived with honor and loved with an open heart.
Services will take place at the Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery with the date and time to be announced when available.
