It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the death of Ellis Wayne Stewart, August 12, 2024, in Gladewater, Texas. Known to many as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Ellis was born on July 17, 1931, in Forgan, Oklahoma, to Claude and Ila Mae Stewart. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Marshfield, Missouri.
Following a brief stint in the Air Force in the early 1950’s, Ellis moved to Liberal, Kansas, where he worked as a baker. It was in Liberal that he met and then married his beloved wife, Pat, in 1953. Ellis and Pat were in Liberal, Kansas, for two years and then moved to Pasadena, California. After nine years working in Pasadena, Ellis was transferred in 1965 to Big Sandy, Texas, to set up and run the print shop at Ambassador College until it closed in 1977. It was after the college's closing that Ellis established his own business, Stewart Printing, leaving a lasting impact on the local community until he retired in 1996. Ellis was active in the Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce and devoted countless hours to the establishment and support of the Big Sandy Museum.
Throughout his life, Ellis was a devoted follower of Christ and His teachings, especially in serving others. He cherished his family, and his memory will forever be held close by his wife of 70 years, Pat Stewart, son Jim Stewart, daughter Liz Russell, son-in-law Doug Russell, grandson Wesley Russell, granddaughter-in-law Stephanie Russell, and great-grandchildren Rose and Lachlan Russell.
Ellis was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan, in 1972, his parents, five brothers, and one sister.
A memorial service to celebrate Ellis's life and legacy will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at 4:00 PM at the United Church of God East Texas, 1007 N. Tyler St, Big Sandy, Texas. Friends and loved ones are invited to attend.
