Fletcher (Coach) Walker left in the arms of Jesus on October 20., after a lengthy battle with chronic kidney disease.
Fletcher was born in Pine Bluff, Ark. on July 14, 1943, to Mary Virginia and Lt. Col. Fletcher Walker, Sr. He was teased forever about not being born in Texas because he was a true Texan all the way.
Coach Walker had an illustrious career as an educator and basketball coach at several school districts. He and wife, Nancy Lowrance Walker, taught at Fairfield, Lockett (Vernon), Lindale, Decatur, Waco Robinson, Lamar CISD, particularly B. F. Terry. He also served Lamar CISD as athletic director. He loved working with students and had the touch of making school fun. He was also instrumental in establishing basketball camps in Texas. After retirement, Coach and Nancy relocated to their farm in Hawkins. He began to volunteer with his son, Rusty’s team at Hallsville ISD where he was lovingly known as Coach Pops.
Fletcher had many interests. He and Nancy were the proud owners of Old Town Antiques in Rosenberg. He loved all things western and trappings of the Old West. His faith was an important part of his life. He was an active member of the Methodist Church wherever they lived. Upon returning to Hawkins, the Walkers became members in the Hawkins First United Methodist Church where they had married. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in August.
Fletcher was a member of The Sons of the Republic of Texas, Kappa Alpha fraternity, Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, and Texas High School Coaches Association. He was also a founder of the Hawkins Education Foundation. He was a graduate of Bellevue H. S., Omaha, Nebraska, and East Texas A& M.
Coach Walker leaves his wife, Nancy Lowrance Walker, son Russell (Rusty) Walker and his wife, Elizabeth, grandson, Barrett Andrew and granddaughter, Sydney Elise, brother, Bill Walker and wife Linda, sister-in-law Ann Walker Jones, sister-in-law Mary Ann Williams, and brother-in-law, Bob Lowrance and wife Michelle along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
Preceding him are his parents Mary Virginia and Lt. Col. Fletcher Walker, Sr., his son, Andy Walker, brother, Capt. Sam Walker, in-laws, Juanita and Robert Lowrance, and brother-in-law, Troy Williams.
Honorary pallbearers are all of Fletcher’s basketball assistant coaches throughout his career.
The family would like to thank DaVita Kidney Center, Longview, Choice Home Health, Concho Hearts Hospice, and Force EMS for their loving care.
Celebration of life will be Sunday, November 1 with visitation from 1:00-2:30 with service at 2:30 at Hawkins First United Methodist Church,
