Larry Gerrell Carter was born October 16, 1943, in Orange County, TX to Eugene B. Carter and Nellie Grace (Haney) Carter.  He passed away on October 5, 2023, at his home in Gilmer, with his wife by his side.

On August 1, 1997, Larry married Margo Meredith in Brenham, Texas.  For the next 7 years they lived and worked in Houston, TX.  They retired to Brenham, TX in 2003, and in 2006, moved to Gilmer, TX.  Their life together was full of love.

Larry was a proud Vietnam Veteran.  He was drafted and served in the Vietnam War on active duty from 1967-1968 in the US Army.  He loved his country and was awarded a Bronze Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Group Operations against Hostile Forces, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Larry attended high school in Las Cruces, New Mexico, returning to Gilmer to graduate from East Mountain High School.  He continued his education at the University of Houston, obtaining a Bachelor Degree of Science in 1978 and a Master of Education Degree in 1989.  He was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi Society.

His work life included working as a manager for Zales Corporation, before leaving to become a teacher with Spring Branch Independent School District.  He was a positive influence for his students in the Vocational Program for many years before assuming duties as a principal.

An early riser, Larry’s days were always filled with activities in his retirement years.  He loved to be outdoors – mowing, building, trimming trees, and doing all kinds of projects.  Larry had boundless energy.

He is survived by his wife, Margo Carter; daughter, Shelly and her husband, Roy Johnson of Houston, TX; stepson, John W. Somers, Jr. of Houston, TX; grandson, Jacob Somers and his son, Jaxon of Murfreesboro, TN; brother, Glenn and his wife, Nancy Carter and their children, Mark, Josh, and Jessamyn Carter, MD, of Gilmer, TX; sister, Nelda and her husband, Jimmy Meixner and their children Claire and Grace Ellen; sister-in-law, Renee Holzer and her husband, Dr. Barry Hail; niece Cassie and her husband, John Eric Fleming and their children, Nikki and Nolan of Sulphur Springs, TX; nephew, BJ and his wife, Krista O’Daniel and their children, Zoe, Haeghan, and Carter; nephew Julio and his wife, Christina Osorio and their children, Levi, Nyah and Liam of Falfurrias, TX.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, father, twin brother, and his older brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 9, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Gilmer, TX.  A visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:15 pm.  Following the Mass, Larry will be laid to rest in the Sandhill Cemetery, Upshur County, TX.
