Mattie P. Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Longview, Texas. Born on February 5, 1943, in Dickson, Tennessee, Mattie was a kind and friendly presence to all who knew her, radiating warmth and joy throughout her life.
Mattie's career was dedicated to her work at Bear Creek Smokehouse, where she devoted forty years of her life before retiring. Her commitment and diligence were reflected not only in her professional life but in the way she approached each day, bringing a strong work ethic and a genuine smile to every endeavor. Her passions extended beyond her career; she found immense pleasure in bird watching, gardening, and nurturing her flowers. Cooking was another joy of hers, as she loved preparing meals that brought family and friends together, creating cherished memories around the dining table.
Mattie was a true family-oriented individual who cherished spending quality time with her loved ones. Her legacy is one of kindness and friendship. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carmel Curtis and Idie Ethel Hudson; husband, Jesse Smith; a son, Randy Gant and a daughter, Peggy Baker. Survivors include her sons, Phillip Gant and wife, Tami, Gary Gant, Timothy Smith; a daughter, Darlene Moore; a sister, Glenda Naldoza and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring Mattie's life will be held on October 3, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Croley Funeral Home in Diana, Texas. The service will provide an opportunity for those who knew and loved Mattie to gather, reflect, and remember the beautiful impact she had on their lives.
As we say our farewells, we remember Mattie as a remarkable woman whose spirit touched many. She will be missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
