Obituary

Maxine Stocks Mora, beloved member of the Cox Community in Upshur County, passed away on July 23, 2026, in Gilmer, Texas. Born on May 5, 1938, to Arthur and Lena Mae Stewart Stocks.

Maxine was born and raised in the Cox Community, where she made her home throughout her life. Her deep roots in this part of Texas were a source of pride, as she resided on cherished family land that continues to remain within the family today, a testament to the enduring bonds and traditions she valued so deeply.

In the early 60’s she attended nursing school and became an LVN. She worked in the medical field until she retired and was quick to offer advice to anyone in need for the remainder of her life. She also worked for Croley Funeral Home for several years as secretary/receptionist meeting hundreds of people.

Her sense of community extended into her spiritual life as well. Maxine was a dedicated member of Victory Baptist Church in the Cox Community. Her faith and commitment to church and community reflected her generous and caring spirit. She could keep a phone line warm, making sure everyone in the neighborhood was doing just fine.

She loved taking care of her small herd of cows who were all spoiled and looked forward to spring for calving season. She didn’t have a bull, but a neighbor’s bull helped her out with that. She knew when it was time for a calf to be born and kept a close eye on them till it was born. Her little dog Sam was her best buddy, and he helped her with all her chores.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Mark Mitchell and wife, Tammy; five granddaughters, Evie Henson, Miranda Todd and husband Nathan, Katrina Hutchins and Brandon Davenport, Ginger Gee and husband Bo, Sarina Danner and Wesley Campbell; twelve great grandchildren, Connor, Maddie and Sophie Todd; Morgan, Owen and Ruby Kate Gee, Taylor Bell and husband Samuel, Grace McNeese and husband Corben, Kenzie Gee, Christian Danner, Asa Danner and Liam Gantt; along with one great great grandson, Boston Reid McNeese and numerous other family and friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom Mora; son, Patrick “Pat” Mitchell, brother, Glen Stocks and sister-in-law, JoAnn Stocks.

Friends and loved ones are invited to honor Maxine’s memory during a visitation on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., both at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.
