Mildred McKamy

Mildred McKamy, aged 97, passed away on May 8, 2025, at the Potomac Manor care facility in Potomac, Maryland where she had lived since 2022 while suffering from advancing Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born on November 14, 1927, in East Texas to Thomas Franklin and Botha Lorene Stokley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Neal McKamy, and her two sisters, Joyce Simpson and Lois Molsher.

Mildred was a dedicated mother to her only son and to her work at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and, later, AT&T, from which she retired after 32 years of service, primarily as a switchboard operator. She raised her son as a single parent practically working herself to death and somehow managing to save money on her meager income. She amassed over a decade of continuous perfect attendance service awards from her employer and often took extra shifts and overtime to make ends meet. Mildred enjoyed a good party with friends and family and board games. She was a doting grandmother and loved little children. Her favorite hobbies included shopping for bargains with her sister Joyce at the various shopping malls around Dallas and Grand Prairie, Texas, and collecting fine china which she displayed. She really enjoyed going out to dinner for Tex-Mex food with family. On her vacations she typically visited family in Diana, Texas and was seen most often under the big oak tree in a chair sipping coffee and talking with her father all day. Mildred was adventuresome and joined her son’s family on many picnics at Rocky Mountain National Park and walking on the nature trails well above tree-line in the thin air surrounded by snow fields. A favorite family ritual while her two grandchildren were growing up was Friday nights at her condo where Mildred cooked fried chicken, fried okra, mashed potatoes, and rolls for the family! No one could cook fried chicken or okra better than she could! Mildred was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and was a member of a local Baptist church wherever she lived. Throughout her life, she lived in Texas, Colorado, and finally, Maryland, choosing to stay close to her immediate family.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Jerry Neal McKamy (Vicky) of Summerville, South Carolina, her brother Raymond Stokley of Diana, Texas, two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
