Norma Jean Penney

Norma Jean Penney, a cherished member of the Big Sandy community, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in Tyler, Texas. Born on August 15, 1935, in Looneyville, Texas to Milburn Perry Richards and Johnnie Velma (Rogers) Richards.

Norma spent her life inspiring generations of students at Big Sandy Independent School District, where she was a beloved educator for many years. Norma’s love for teaching was matched only by her passion for music and creativity. Norma was an active participant in her community. She enjoyed playing the piano at her church, sharing her musical talents with those around her. Norma also dedicated her time to volunteering at local nursing homes, bringing companionship and support to residents who treasured her presence.

Above all, she treasured the time spent with her family, always finding joy in their company.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Rick Penney and wife Anna, Kent Penney and wife Margie; brother, Mike Richards and wife Debra; grandchildren, Scott Penney, Tiffany Moffeit and husband Larry, Yesenia Hower and husband Ryan, Carlos Rodriguez and wife Eliana; great grandchildren, Isaac Penney, Sawyer Penney, Marlo Rodriguez, Zavi Rodriguez, Roan Hower and Olivia Hower.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Charles Penney.

A funeral service will be held on January 18, 2026, at the First Baptist Church in Big Sandy, Texas, beginning at 2:00 PM with visitation being 1 hour prior to service. Interment to follow at Chilton Cemetery in Big Sandy.
