John Guyton Woody Jr. of Longview Texas was born on April 17, 1941, at Baylor hospital in Dallas Texas. He died on July 13, 2023. He was 82 years old. John did many things throughout his long life. He started his career as a radio announcer working for one of the best stations in Abilene. At one time he ran a bait shop and a shrimp boat in Rockport. For a brief time, he owned and operated a local Television station in Abilene. But his life truly came into focus in 1966 when he attended a Lay Witness mission and answered the call for Pastoral ministry. John was a United Methodist Pastor to his core. He loved God and spent his entire life in service to the Church. Throughout his ministry he changed many lives and introduced countless people to Jesus Christ.
John is preceded in death by his parents; John Guyton Woody Sr, and Wendly Doris Petty. By his first wife, Peggy Hanes, and by his second wife, Myrna Spaulding, and by a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Woody.
John is survived by his wife Joann Woody who brought him immense joy in his final years. By his sons; Steve Woody and his wife Pam, Phillip Woody and his wife Janet, and Norman Woody and his wife, Melanie, by his daughter, Pam Thompson, and her husband Roy, and by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of other friends and family.
Funeral services for Rev. Woody will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, TX, with Rev. Ted Richardson officiating, where a viewing will be held one hour prior to the services. Following the funeral, John will be laid to rest in the Perryville Cemetery in Wood County, TX.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Golden Cross. The Texas Annual Conference Golden Cross program has been providing a healing ministry to United Methodist Church members in need of assistance with medical care since its beginning in 1921. Many persons have been restored to health and have had their faith restored as well, through the generosity of Christians in the local churches and the benevolent medical care of doctors and hospitals throughout the Conference.
