Tirzah Snow Petty

Tirzah Walker Petty, age 96, of Gilmer, died on July 18, 2015, in Longview, Texas. She was born December 7, 1918, at Brashear in Hopkins County to Jesse George and Mary Rauhoff Walker. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2015, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer with Reverend Wayne Norvell and Bro. Gary Mason officiating. Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Park in Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Petty graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and received a Bachelor and Masters Degree from East Texas State Teachers University, which is now Texas A & M at Commerce. Mrs. Petty was a retired teacher with a 33 year career. She taught in Greenville, Gladewater and the last 21 years at Gilmer ISD. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gilmer since 1954. She was a member of the Dorcus Sunday School Class, Triple L, Upshur County Senior Citizens, Daughters of the American Revolution, Easter Star, a Charter Member of the Upshur County Retired School Employees and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Wally Byam Airstream Travel Club. She married Mansel A. "Mike" Petty June 14, 1953. He preceded her in death April 3, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a brother and sister-in-law J. G. and Mary Jo Walker, Jr. of Yantis, and a nephew, Dr. John Petty. She is survived by one sister and husband, Charlotte and John Turner of Point, one brother and two sisters-in-law, Sherrell and Peggy Walker of Gilmer and Edna Bell Walker of Seymour, Missouri and by her beloved neighbors of 40 plus years, Ronnie and Leah Davidson who were like children to her. She is survived by nephews Randy Walker, Sidney Walker, Roger Venable, J. C. Venable, Jr., Larry Venable, Gene Walker, Jesse Walker, Jason Walker, Jonathan Walker, J. C. Petty and numerous great nephews and nieces. Pallbearers will be nephews, Roger Venable, Larry Venable, Gene Walker, Jesse Walker, Andrew E. Walker, Seth Walker, and Adam Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Venable and students she taught from 1941-1974.
